The Substance Abuse Studies Training Program (SASTP) provides the education requirements for
the Licensed Substance Abuse Associate (LSAA), or Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC) in New Mexico, as well as meet NAADAC national standards. We offer the most current training and resources available to give you the best skills and tools needed to become licensed in the field of substance abuse counseling. Our instructors include the most proven and promising treatment modalities in their training. Their credentials offer you the best of both worlds—knowledgeable educators, who are experienced counselors in the field.

Information about Licensure
For questions regarding specific requirements for the LSAA and the LADAC certification, contact the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board (NMCTPB) at www.rld.state.nm.us or (505) 476-4610. NMCTPB requires an AA or higher from an accredited institution of higher education. A Bachelor’s or master’s degree is preferred. A Board representative will be able to answer your questions regarding your current counseling license or allowable degree programs.

Information about the Courses
Classes meet 8:30am - 5:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays of every other weekend except holidays.
The weekend format provides a concentrated learning experience while allowing participants to meet their weekday employment and personal obligations. The full program consists of 14 classes for a total of 224 hours.

To enroll in the program, download the Program Approval Inquiry.

CEHs and Credit
Each course qualifies for 16 NAADAC Continuing Education Hours (CEH). To receive CEHs, students will need to attend all 16 hours of class, and demonstrate understanding of the material covered by passing the course exam with a grade of 70% or higher. Partial credit is not given.

This program is subsidized by the New Mexico Legislature under House Bill 7. Because the purpose of this funding is to increase the number of licensed counselors in the state of New Mexico, seating is limited for CEHs. The subsidized tuition is subject to the continuation of this funding

Undergraduate college credit is available through UNM Extended University for an additional fee and course requirements. Inquire about this with the Program Supervisor.

Prerequisites for Enrollment
Due to the intensity and nature of our program we request that those in recovery have been sober for a minimum of one year before seeking admission. Some may find it more helpful to have two or more years in recovery. Please note that the courses are not intended as part of a recovery program to support participant sobriety, or as a replacement for therapy.
