Become a Paralegal

This program is an intense, fast-paced introduction to the legal system, basic concepts of paralegalism, and legal research and writing. Small classes taught in an interactive hands-on style give students a solid foundation in the legal system, legal terminology, civil procedure, criminal procedure, evidence, interviewing, law office management, and ethics.

Students who complete this course gain skills in drafting documents, interviewing, trial preparation, briefing cases, and legal research and writing, utilizing the UNM Law Library, WESTLAW, and visits to observe motions and trials in the courtroom. Students are required to complete basic legal research and writing assignments including legal memoranda.

Upon successful completion and at the recommendation of the instructor, students are eligible to apply for a mentored paralegal internship in government setting or private law firms. Internship sites are arranged by the instructor.

Over 75% of the students who have completed both the course and the internship are currently working as Paralegals.
