This program is an intense, fast-paced introduction to the legal system and basic concepts of paralegalism. Small classes taught in an interactive, hands-on style give students a solid foundation in civil procedure, litigation, evidence, interviewing, law office management and ethics. Students are trained to enter records in District Court, using court rules and procedure. And develop skills through practice in legal analysis, elementary legal research, online research, and legal writing.
Students who complete this course are able to discuss basic legal terminology, the legal system, litigation assistantship and evidence, civil procedure, and law office management skills. Students will gain skills in legal analysis and briefing cases. Students visit the law library, a courtroom, have access to Westlaw, and complete basic legal writing assignments including legal memoranda.
Upon successful completion and at the recommendation of the instructor, students are eligible to apply for a mentored paralegal internship in government setting or private law firms. Internship sites are arranged by the instructor.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be eligible to apply for a paralegal internship in a variety of legal settings.
