19118 Athens, 1986 to Present: Myth and Modernity
In this illustrated lecture, we will contrast the visitors' image of modern Athens, which focuses on antiquity, with the inhabitants' experience of the city today, as it is continuously affected by politics, the economy, popular culture, and personal experience. Where does the real Athens, then, lie? Perhaps somewhere between the classical and the modern myths. Our aim is to contrast the idea of Athens as a timeless symbol of western culture with the reality of Athens today, as it changes and adapts to global culture.

19501 Dog my Cats: Reading and Writing About Pets
Stories about pets abound--and not just dog and cat stories. Stories about all kinds of animals populate libraries, bookstores, television, and movie theatres. Children's books would be almost non-existent without animals in them. Accounts of a favorite pet's life or death, funny antics, or sad encounters stir everyone's emotions and imaginations. One way to express our fondness for or frustration with our pets is to write about them, or even to them, to record our puzzlement over or understanding of one of the most powerful bonds humans have with nature. This course will provide the opportunity to write about a favorite dog or cat, turtle or bird, horse or hare resulting in a codified memory to share with others. Key animal stories will serve as an initial basis of discussion.

19538 Death Finds an Audience: The History of the Mystery Novel, 1840-1930
Edgar Allen Poe's short stories featuring detective Dupin and represented a new literary genre that appealed to citizens concerned about crime in their teeming cities. Other writers amplified the detective story into full length novels by the 1870s. By the 1890s, readers eagerly embraced the debut of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, the most famous sleuth of all time. In the 1920s, the mystery novel in the skilled hands of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers reached its Golden Age. Why did the stories of murder and deception prove so appealing to audiences? What social problems did the writers of mystery novels expose in this new genre? What conventions developed that defined the mystery novel by its Golden Age? We will explore these questions with stories by a variety of writers.

19693 The Big Band Era
While people in the United States nervously watched the changing face of Europe in the 1930s, American popular music was on the rise to unparalleled heights. Although a case can be made for big band music stretching back into the 19th century, the bands hit their peak from 1930-1945, and this is commonly called the Big Band Era. The first half of this class will set the stage and look at the players who were just beginning to put their bands together in the 1930s, while the second half will explore the music scene during World War II. Both sessions will be amply supported by recordings of classic bands including Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and the Dorsey Brothers.

19712 A History of Doomsday Prophesies
Humankind has been forecasting its own demise since the beginning of time. A 5,000 year old Assyrian clay tablet found in the Middle East desert several decades ago is our first known evidence of a doomsday prophecy. Ancient Rome was founded in 753 BC and superstitious Romans believed it would be destroyed only 120 years later. Jesus' apostles believed his prediction that he would return in their lifetimes and bring the end of the world with him. The late evangelist, Harold Camping twice predicted the end of the world, most recently on May 22 of 2011. Will December 21, 2012 when the Mayan calendar ends, also be the end of humankind? What happens on December 22? Will humans ever cease to predict their own doom?

19783 Plagues, Pestilence and Pandemics
To understand plague, we must first understand the interactions between ourselves and our ever-present companions, the invisible world of bacteria and other micro-organisms which surrounds us. Only a small percentage of these are unfriendly, but these have been responsible for the deaths of countless millions of people over the centuries, often in pandemics where a subtantial proportion of the population died, such as the Black Death, which killed between 1/3 and 1/2 of the population of Europe. Since the discovery of the offending bacteria, the term Plague has been reserved for a particular disease which still exists, and still has the potential for major epidemics. We'll discuss treatment, control, and prevention, as well as the threat of future pandemics.

The brilliant civilization Islam created in Medieval Spain featured vibrant cultural cross-pollinations amid the conflicts among the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities. This was La Convivencia of the 8th through 11th centuries - a remarkable period of toleration and flowing together" of the three cultures. Indeed the Jewish Medieval Golden Age occurred in Al-Andaluz. This was followed by four centuries of the increasing conflict, persecution, and ethnic cleansing of La Reconquista. The many tantalizing legacies and ambiguities of Al Andaluz will be assessed."

19592 Emerson and Thoreau: American Trancendentalism
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau go far in defining the American Romantic movement and more particularly our country's brand of transcendentalism. Their friendship and reciprocal influence as part of what critics label the American Renaissance is legendary and iconic. This course will discuss key texts by both authors and delve into the cultural and biographical contexts which nourished such genius--such literary and philosophical greatness.

19598 Leonard Cohen and Robertson Davies: Canadian Men of Letters
Poet, songwriter, and novelist Leonard Cohen is known by many because of his music; novelist, playwright, lecturer and philosopher Robertson Davies is equally important in Canada's literary canon, but not as well known in the United States. We would read one of Davies' trilogies and some of his lectures and discuss these. We would read and discuss some of Cohen's work, and listen to some of his music. We can also watch their presentations via internet sites such as YouTube. There is a richness in the works of these men that give us a historical sense of Canada similar to earlier northeastern United States, and both men's writings have relevance to all our experience. Moreover, both are steeped in mythology and symbolism.

19454 Who Were Celtiberians?
Spanish Celts! Who were the Celtiberians? The ethnicity of a people can be traced linguistically, but also through surnames and cultural practices. Is your last name Gallegos? That translates as Gallic, or Celt. When you married did they use el lazo? And do you celebrate the Celtic New Year as Dia de los Muertos? Perhaps you celebrate with cerveza (Gaelic for beer) rather than Scotch, but your house might be constructed with Tapia (sod) or have a Torreon (Tor = tower). These cultural practices and many others, endure to reveal a proud heritage. Well explore the archaeological as well as historical foundations of Celtiberians, who they were, and who they are today.

19232 Why War in the 21st Century? A Multi-disciplinary Inquiry
Globalization has drastically increased the economic, communication and educational links among the various peoples inhabiting the globe. One would think with such increased contact and shared interests, war would be discarded as a useless anachronism. Yet the first decade of the 21st century has been marked by remarkably savage conflicts. This paradox will be addressed from perspectives drawn from anthropology, political science, psychology, political economy and history.

19442 There's Somethin' Happenin' Here: America and Vietnam
We'll explore the difficult relationship between the United States and Vietnam. Beginning with the French in Indochina, the course examines imperialist pressures and the rise of Marxist ideas in Indochina. America will replace the French in 1954, ushering in a new challenge for the Vietnamese. The Cold War brings new concerns for Vietnam, with political decisions in the United States that lead to full-scale war. Military, political, social, generational and economic interests collide. We'll highlight the main factors that keep Vietnam as a reoccurring issue in American politics.
