00538 Volunteer Tour, Ethiopia
UNM Continuing Education is pleased to invite you to join our first “Volunteer Tour.” Our destination is Ethiopia—one of the few African countries to have escaped European colonialism and kept a firm grasp on its cultural identity. We will fly into Addis Ababa, the capital city, where we will stay at the Hilton Hotel, visit the largest open-air Mercado in all of Africa and have dinner at a restaurant featuring dances and songs of tribal regions of Ethiopia. Next, we fly to Bahar Dar, located on the shore of Ethiopia’s largest lake— Lake Tana. For five days we will volunteer in our areas of expertise or interest such as: teaching English to school children; training volunteer care givers to administer first aid; and designing buildings for youth centers. We will visit the many 16th and 17th century monasteries on the lake, one of Haile Selassie’s palaces; the Blue Nile Falls, keeping an eye out for hippos and crocodiles; and engage in information exchanges with youth and elders in the community. We leave Bahar Dar and fly to Lalibella and then Gondor where we will spend our last 5 days in Ethiopia touring the historic 12th and 13th century rock churches in one of the oldest Christian civilizations in the world with the longest archaeological record of any country on earth. Fee includes travel within Ethiopia, most meals, all lodging, tour guides and entrance fees.
