08553 Middle Eastern Film
In this seven week class we will view films from five countries that have been in the U.S. new for the last few years: Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Palestine and Israel. Following each film we will have discussions based on questions formulated specifically for each film. Additionally, a few clips and/or short films from the U.S. and Canada will be shown in order to illustrate how fundamentally differently images of the Middle East are both presented and viewed in the West as compared to the Middle East itself.
Note: Class will not meet on July 10.

08568 Foreign Film Buffs
Foreign films are interesting to us because they come from a different background. The stories, direction, costuming, etc. are based upon the particular culture of the country. We will explore a variety of films from different countries, chosen in class. Our last film will be an American musical, because this is what we do best and we can contrast it with other films we have seen. Some you may have seen; some you may have missed, but they will all be worth seeing and discussing.

08556 Buddhism Basics
Nearly 2600 years ago, Prince Siddhartha, a young nobleman, left the comforts of his wife, his family and his palatial trappings to become a wandering ascetic searching for life's meaning. Unfulfilled, he lay down under a bodhi tree and vowed not to arise until he fully realized life's meaning and mystery. He arose as Gautama Buddha, the Awakened One. From forty years' teachings of that experience, Buddhism was born. Begin to develop a mastery for your own life. Explore Buddha's enlightenment within the Four Noble Truths. Challenge yourself to enjoy fully life's bounty in the exploration of the Noble Eightfold Path. This course is open to any person of any faith with or without any present or prior spiritual inclination or development.
