The exercises in this course are designed to improve posture, body awareness, core strength, and stability. All exercises will be performed in a controlled manner and with proper breathing techniques in order to emphasize the mind-body connection. If you have a health condition you must bring a physician's approval. This class is limited to 5 students.

06480 Introduction to Aikido
Aikido is a Martial Art from Japan and means the way of harmony with the principle and force of nature." Learn the basic fundamentals of body movement, technique and the philosophy of Aikido. Most practice is done with a partner; each works at his or her level of ability, alternating as uke (the attacker) and nage (the one who receives the attack). Both roles are stressed; each contributes skills that enhance overall sensitivity and control. The final aim of Aikido is personal transformation, it is a discipline for perfecting the spirit which allows for the creation of integrated human beings. Practice uniform is included in the fee."
Note: This class will not meet on July 4. UNM Tuition Remission eligible.

06483 The Nia Technique
The Nia Technique is a fun, energetic holistic program that provides fitness for the body, the mind, the emotions and the spirit. It is a blend of martial arts, dance arts and body integration therapies (Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Jazz, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance, Yoga, Alexander Technique, and Feldenkrais). Done in bare feet, our dance relaxes the body and increases strength, stamina, and flexibility. Simple choreography and beautiful music encourage new ways of moving that allow for creativity and self-expression. Visualization and focus on sensation create grace and greater self-awareness. Nia is adaptable for any fitness level. Come experience the joy and pleasure of movement.
