Summer Art Classes

We have some great art classes coming up. Improve your skills or learn something new this Summer!

02180 Portraits & Faces in Color For Artists and Craftspeople
Paint SetAnyone can learn these fun and easy basic and advanced techniques for drawing and painting faces on 2D and 3D surfaces in color with paints, color pencils, ink and more. Learn how to prepare the surfaces and different projects. We will cover the basics of step by step facial proportions at different ages, male and female, and how to portray lifelike character with facial expressions. There will be many inspirational examples and samples to view in class. Students please bring items such as gourds, wood, fabric or collages to practice on. Please bring a sack lunch.
Note A $25 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

02173 Pastels are Paint…Not Chalk
This two-day workshop is a simple hands-on class that is a great way to experience pastels. We will talk about pastels and try working with different makes of pastels and papers. On Saturday, we will meet at Artisan Studio for the day to experiment with pastels without the pressure of perfect composition. For those of you coming back to art after a hiatus, this is a great class: pastels require no liquid mixing or waiting for things to dry… just get going with color! This class is designed for those with a curiosity of pastel painting and have wondered where to start.
Note: A materials fee of $10 is payable to the instructor on Friday night.

02207 Sketching and Creative Journaling
Sketching and journaling outdoors is a wonderful way to enhance your appreciation of Albuquerque’s wild and urban areas. Both beginners and more experienced artists are welcome. Through group instruction and sharing by participants we will be inspired by easy sketching techniques and styles in watercolor, pen & ink, and color pencil. During the summer we will take field trips to the cooler elevation’s in the mountains near Albuquerque. Some short hikes to picturesque sites will be included. Each week we will visit a different place and record our experiences with a variety of creative words and images. Carpooling is encouraged. Approximate cost of materials is $35. A supplies list will be available at registration. Only the first class will meet at the Nature Center.

03257 Culinary Skills I
This hands-on course will provide a basic understanding of the kitchen. Cooking is both an art and a science. Learning to cook is more than learning to follow a recipe. When you grasp the fundamentals of any skill, you become relaxed, confident and able to improvise. Understand the basic foundations of cooking and you are liberated from reliance on recipes and truly experience the joys of cooking. This course is the perfect starting point for all skill levels, from the beginner to the more experienced cook. A sampling of the dishes you will prepare: a seasonal selection of appetizers and desserts, roasted chicken breast with a pan sauce, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and mixed green salad with a classic vinaigrette.

Summer Workshop: Cartooning For Kids

Calling all kids!

Cartooning for KidsYoungsters will be able to take workshops by the co-creator of the “Pink Panther” cartoon strip beginning this June, at UNM Continuing Education.

Los Angeles based Cartoonist Eric Teitelbaum, whose cartoons also have appeared in The New Yorker, will teach both cartooning and computer workshops for students ages 10 to 16. Each three-day mini-summer camp will be held on the campus. The courses are part of the UNM exciting Summer Youth Creativity Program.

The first class in the series, “Funny Pictures: Cartooning for Kids” will be held Monday-Wednesday, June 15-17 from 9am-12pm. Children will learn secrets of cartoon drawing, including faces, expression, caricaturing, wild animals, super heroes, creative writing and designing your own original character.

The second class, “Computer Video Game Design” will be held from 1:00pm-4:00pm, Monday-Wednesday, also on June 15-17. Teitelbaum will co-teach the workshop with noted entertainment designer, Robert Dillworth, whose creative credits include Sony, Warner and the “Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Youngsters will be introduced to video game character design, writing story lines and developing animation effects using the acclaimed software, Adobe Flash.

The Pink Panther Comic Strip appeared in international newspapers over the past four years. Original comic art will soon be seen in art galleries beginning this fall.
