Enhance your enjoyment of the outdoors by knowing the native plants. The class will car pool for field trips with moderate hikes. This class is for beginners and those renewing their knowledge of wildflowers. - starts July 7

A gentle walk in the woods to discover the abundant medicinal plants of New Mexico. Explore where to look for herbs in the Sandia forests. Learn to recognize plants for cooking and plants for healing. Relax in the healing natural world. - held July 12

You can grow herbs to support health and well being in a small balcony or a big backyard! Learn about the “good weeds” and local herbs, identify what you want to grow and get resource information. Discovering Feng Shui
Celebrate your home! Learn how to create spaces that delight the senses and nourish the soul. Part 1 explores interior and energy flow. Learn to detect different types of energy and “cures” for imbalances. Part 2 covers the Five Element Theory — positive and destructive placements, energy and colors. Club Ed - Filmmaking

Have fun at CLUB ED this summer!
Three or four courses combine to create a week of total immersion training in:
• Digital Filmmaking I - Beginning June 23 - 27
• Digital Filmmaking II - Intermediate July 14 - 18

Filmmaking I: Beginning: June 23 - June 27
Three courses combine to give you everything you need to know to shoot effective footage and edit the clips to tell a story. In just a week of your time, you can learn how to capture the action in walking field trips led by experienced filmmakers, then come back to the Digital Arts Computer Lab for digital editing and post production.

Filmmaking II: Intermediate - July 14 - July 18
Four courses combine to take it to the next level. In just a week of your time, you can learn basic skills to achieve satisfying and professional-looking footage and the essentials of lighting and audio setups. Then, go beyond the fundamentals of digital video editing, led by an award-winning video editor in the Digital Arts Computer Lab. Enjoy hands-on simulations with high-end equipment in a professional motion picture and television production studio. Explore the big picture of the digital revolution with a cinematographer. This will be a milestone week in your filmmaking aspirations!

Digital Arts instructor cohosts UNM podcast

Mark Hinton, Continuing Education instructor and local blogger, has been invited to cohost a recurring podcast series, “Geek Talk,” on UNM Live by Benson Hendrix, University Communication and Marketing Department (UCAM) public relations specialist.

Geek Talk started after a UNM Live interview with Mark,” says Benson. “Mark had recently written ‘Windows Vista Solutions,’ and I wanted to have him as a guest. We hit it off really well and had a great give and take, and as a result I asked him to be my co-host on a tech-themed podcast.”

UNM Live is an ongoing series of online interviews, discussions and lectures developed by the University Communication and Marketing Department (UCAM). It’s available to listeners through iTunes, RSS feeds or on the UNM Live Web site at unmlive.unm.edu.

Mescalero Apache Coming of Age Ceremony
Travel to South Central New Mexico for the Mescalero Apache Coming of Age Ceremony. Held annually during the first week in July, the ceremony celebrates the passage of Apache girls into womanhood and features wonderful traditional food and social dances, the dance of the Apache Maidens and the night dance of the Mountain gods.
Fee includes travel, overnight lodging, and tour guide, Cynthia Prelo-Riedlinger.

Three Wineries and Lunch
We begin at the Ponderosa Valley Vineyards and Winery on the beautiful southern slope of the Jemez Mountains. Mary and Henry have produced award-winning Riesling here since 1978. Next stop, the Anasazi Fields Winery on the western edge of the old village of Placitas. We’ll enjoy lunch in Corrales before visiting Barbara and Keith’s Corrales Winery. Fifth International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe
The largest international folk art market in the US takes place on Museum Hill in Santa Fe. Organized by the Museum of International Folk Art, this dazzling juried bazaar brings in over a hundred artists from Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America and beyond. Enjoy international music and dancing and artist demonstrations. The world is coming to Santa Fe! Fee includes entrance cost and travel. Enjoy the show without worrying about parking!

Watch the Ospreys Soar
Ospreys are plentiful in many areas of the United States, but their return to the rivers and lakes of northern New Mexico after a long absence is very exciting. OspreyFest 2008 at Heron Lake State Park celebrates their return and is designed to surprise and delight birders and wildlife enthusiasts of all ages! Casa Rondeña Winery not only offers some of New Mexico’s finest wine, it includes some of the state’s most striking architecture. butterflyJoin award-winning digital photographer Lisa Tannenbaum and Steve Cary, New Mexico State Parks Chief Naturalist, at the annual butterfly count at Sugarite Canyon State Park. This is a chance to see a natural phenomenon for yourself, and to experience some unique photographic opportunities. Besides a large number of butterfly species, Sugarite Canyon State Park is also the home of two lakes, numerous wildflowers, and the ruins of a once-thriving coal camp. If time permits, we’ll take a spin through Raton, an old railroad town. Fee includes instruction in digital photography, lodging, travel and a memorable getaway.
