Personal Enrichment - June Preview

Swimming: Parent/Child (Ages 6 months-3 years)
swimmingParents, learn techniques for teaching your child through demonstration, repetition, and praise. This course promotes water safety knowledge and practices, aquatic adjustment and swimming readiness skills, participation, socialization, and fun and enjoyment in the water. Parents must furnish a written clearance from the child’s physician and provide their own suits and towels. Enrollment is limited to 10 parent/child teams.

dad and sonLearn the skills professionals use everyday to make your little angels obey and cooperate. This class is a comprehensive and interactive class about strengthening the parent-child relationship. It teaches how to apply developmental stages to create better parental understanding. It explains how temperament differences affect the parent-child relationship. It will teach the five different Love Languages, which are how individuals receive and express love. It will teach innovative communication techniques. Parents will learn effective ways to help children and themselves express difficult emotions through, art, play, role-playing and multi-media. In addition, each class will include family enrichment interactive bonding and attachment activities. Bring your life partner and a willingness to learn more about life’s most precious gift, parenting.

06528 Gentle Chair Yoga
woman smilingIn this Yoga class students will practice Yoga in a manner that is slow paced, gentle and supported. All postures will be practiced either seated in a chair or using the support of the chair while standing. Modifications and alternative poses will be offered as needed. Students will be encouraged to respect the limits of their bodies, while exploring individual means of expansion within those limits. Simple and safe methods of imcreasing both flexibility and strength will be offered. The use of Yoga props such as blankets, bolsters and straps will further support us in the deeply relaxing Restorative Yoga poses. Students will be encouraged to create a short personal Chair Yoga Routine to serve their individual needs and that could be practiced at home. Please come to class with a fairly empty stomach and wear loose comfortable clothing.

Geographic Information Systems - Free Info Session

Come to this free informational session and learn how to use Geographic Information Systems to help identify solutions for complex, real world challenges. GIS provides tools to analyze any comprehensive set of data tied to location information.

More and more businesses are turning to GIS to address their needs for data collection and to make more informed decisions.

Program instructors Tim O’Brien and Kurt Menke will be on hand to answer questions about the GIS Analyst Certificate and provide information on job opportunities in New Mexico.

Become a Certified Personal Trainer

Personal TrainerLearn the skills to become a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) for a career move or for your own personal knowledge through the World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.). This challenging course is taught in collaboration with W.I.T.S. and local health clubs over a six-week period for better retention and skill competency; the certification exam is held on the sixth week.

The course is a 36 hour program which includes 15 hours of lecture, 15 hours of practical training, and 6 hours allotted for the exam. Students will set up and complete a 20 hour internship which is also part of the certification, providing a great opportunity to connect with employers while getting practical experience.

Students will have to provide proof of CPR training for issuance of certificate. The local Red Cross offers CPR training; for further information, see their website: redcrossalbq.org.

Summer Workshop: Cartooning For Kids

Calling all kids!

Cartooning for KidsYoungsters will be able to take workshops by the co-creator of the “Pink Panther” cartoon strip beginning this June, at UNM Continuing Education.

Los Angeles based Cartoonist Eric Teitelbaum, whose cartoons also have appeared in The New Yorker, will teach both cartooning and computer workshops for students ages 10 to 16. Each three-day mini-summer camp will be held on the campus. The courses are part of the UNM exciting Summer Youth Creativity Program.

The first class in the series, “Funny Pictures: Cartooning for Kids” will be held Monday-Wednesday, June 15-17 from 9am-12pm. Children will learn secrets of cartoon drawing, including faces, expression, caricaturing, wild animals, super heroes, creative writing and designing your own original character.

The second class, “Computer Video Game Design” will be held from 1:00pm-4:00pm, Monday-Wednesday, also on June 15-17. Teitelbaum will co-teach the workshop with noted entertainment designer, Robert Dillworth, whose creative credits include Sony, Warner and the “Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Youngsters will be introduced to video game character design, writing story lines and developing animation effects using the acclaimed software, Adobe Flash.

The Pink Panther Comic Strip appeared in international newspapers over the past four years. Original comic art will soon be seen in art galleries beginning this fall.
