Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals

Enhance your communication skills! Motivational interviewing is a unique style of communication that has demonstrated success with very resistant clients, such as those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. More recent adaptations of this approach to medical settings have been effective in improving a wide range of problem behaviors, including physical inactivity. This motivational approach is well suited to the daily practice of a busy clinic, where improved patient compliance is a priority. Skillful application by a clinician provides a platform for patients to follow a healthful treatment plan instead of exhibiting resistance. Consequently, clinical consultations are not only more effective, but also less frustrating to the provider.

Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals, Saturdays, May 31-June 28 from 9am-1pm at UNM Continuing Education, 1634 University Blvd NE. Cost is $269. For information call 277-6025. To register or to request a catalog, call 277-0077 or visit our web site at dce.unm.edu.
