Enhance your communication skills! Motivational interviewing is a unique style of communication that has demonstrated success with very resistant clients, such as those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

More recent adaptations of this approach to medical settings have been effective in improving a wide range of problem behaviors, including physical inactivity. This motivational approach is well suited to the daily practice of a busy clinic, where improved patient compliance is a priority. Skillful application by a clinician provides a platform for patients to follow a healthful treatment plan instead of exhibiting resistance. Consequently, clinical consultations are not only more effective, but also less frustrating to the provider.

Instructor Robert Scales, PhD, has a doctorate degree in Health Education and he is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of New Mexico, where he conducts research and teaches cardiac rehabilitation and motivational interviewing in the physical therapy and pharmacy school programs. He was the Principal Investigator in the Cardiovascular Health Initiative and Lifestyle Education Study, otherwise known as the CHILE Study, the first study to investigate the impact of motivational interviewing on the behaviors of patients attending cardiac rehabilitation. Dr. Scales has received outstanding achievements awards for his research and he has presented his work in North and South America, Europe and Australia.

In his role of coordinating cardiac rehab programs at various hospitals in New Mexico, he has counseled more than 3500 patients over the past 10 years who were recovering from heart disease. Adaptations of his work using motivational interviewing with clinical populations have focused on the prevention and management of diabetes in Native American communities and he continues to work extensively with the Indian Health Service as a consultant.

Dr. Scales is an experienced trainer in motivational interviewing and he has trained both students and clinicians from a variety of healthcare disciplines to use the approach within their own clinical settings. He is a member of the International Association of Motivational Interviewing Trainers and he was trained by the originators of the approach, William Miller and Stephen Rollnick.
