Ready for a challenge?

Topo Map and Compass for the Wilderness Hiker course starts soon
Now enrolling - starts April 23!
Wednesdays, April 23 & 30, 6:30pm - 9:30pm,
Saturday, Sunday field trips,
May 3 & 4, 8:30am-4:40pm

Gain the confidence to hike cross-country (off trail) because you know exactly where you are.

The first evening covers the basics: topographic maps, declination, and supplies. The second evening concentrates on map contours — the unique feature of topo maps that gives you a picture of the terrain.

PLOT YOUR COURSE: The Saturday field trip meets in the mountains near Placitas. We hike 1-2 miles to a vantage point, and learn how to use a base-plate compass, take compass readings, practice triangulation, and learn to use map and compass together.

THE FUN OF ROUTEFINDING IN DIFFICULT TERRAIN:
On the Sunday field trip, we’ll spend most of the day on a challenging routefinding hike of several miles, learning how to walk on compass bearing in open and forested country and around obstacles.
Learn about a recent award the instructor, Susan Thiele, has received.

2008 Digital Arts Conference a great success!

Digital Arts ConferenceThe recent Digital Arts Conference, held on March 1, 2008, brought together many leaders in Digital Arts, and packed a lot of learning experiences for graphic and web designers, digital photographers and filmmakers, into one dynamic day.

The keynote presentation by Bart Cleveland, principal of McKee Wallwork Cleveland, was told from a perspective gained in his experience leading major-award winning campaigns around the globe. He touched on great insights in the course of telling his stories. It was more than a keynote, it was an inspiring education in marketing for designers and marketers alike.

The general session by Jason Hariton of the recently built Albuquerque Studios, a premiere film production facility, explained its mission and the economic benefits to the Albuquerque community, as well as granting the audience a digital flyover through the studio — a virtual “inside look.”

And that’s just the beginning! There was a host of digital arts topics in the breakout sessions and networking opportunities at lunch and throughout the day. To the right, Maggie Macnab, Digital Arts Program instructor and recently published author of a book on design, answers a student’s questions about his project.
