Artist Robert Montoya in Rio Rancho Feb 26

Traditional Pueblo Painting

The Story of New Mexico brings Robert Montoya to share his life as an artist with us in Rio Rancho on Monday, February 26. He will show slides of his famous mural, Indian Maiden Feeding Deer, showcased at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Soe Khuwa Pin, Montoya’s Tewa name, means Fog Mountain, describing him as an ally with things of the imagination and spirit. His artwork is a changing blend of contemporary and traditional Indian art styles and draws from the sources of pueblo life, religious symbols, pictographs, and the artist’s imagination. Come and bring your questions as we listen to him share some of his ideas and how he became an artist.

Robert Montoya is a self-taught artist with ties to both Sandia and San Juan Pueblos. He was encouraged to paint by his artist-teacher mother and his father, a skilled carpenter. He has a degree in architecture from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Oklahoma. He is vice-president of Mimbres and Associates, an architectural and city-planning firm in Santa Fe. He won a Best-of-Show award at the Santa Fe Indian Market.

Train here for creative filmmaking careers

Developing local “above-the-line” talent is a priority of the governor’s office and the New Mexico Film Commission because it’s important to the future growth of the state’s successful incentive program for the local filmmaking industry. Above-the-line refers to the creative team: producers, directors, writers, and actors.

“It’s time for the state to start nurturing its own above-the-line talent,” says Lisa Strout, New Mexico Film Office director. “We need to start with our stories, we need to find our writers.”

That’s where Continuing Education’s groundbreaking On Camera! program comes in. In these courses, active professionals from the filmmaking industry teach practical skills in workshop settings. You can join the growing New Mexico film industry by learning how to offer a compelling story, create the right look with make-up and costuming, or produce and direct the story on the big screen. See the schedule of Spring On Camera! courses below:
