02152 Drawing Fundamentals

Study drawing as a preparation for painting, sculpture, and other visual arts as well as a creative visual medium of expression in its own right. Explore the creative uses of such drawing tools as drawing pencils, charcoal, conte-crayon, pen and ink, and brush and ink. The class will work toward developing perspective and 3-dimensionalism. This class is for the beginning drawing student (may be repeated). Bring to the first class a sketchbook (at least 12″x18″) and a drawing pencil. Materials will be discussed at the first class meeting. Note: Approximate cost of materials is $20.

02172 Japanese Sumi-e Painting

paint brushesThis is an entry level course for people who have never had experience with Japanese style brush-and-ink painting (sumi-e). This course will teach the basic philosophy behind this art form and instruct the students in forming the fundamental techniques which are used in all aspects of sumi-e. The techniques are simple, and when put together the student will be able to create quality aesthetically pleasing works of art. In this art form practice does indeed make perfect. Because of the repetition involved, students with some experience with sumi-e will also find this course helpful.

02227 The Hiking Artist

aspens“Hike a little, sketch a little” is the motto for this outdoor art class. On each of two all-day field trips, we hike about 3-4 miles during the day with frequent stops to explore various ways of outdoor sketching. The first hike we do more rapid 10 minute sketches. The second hike we take a bit more time for color sketches. In an evening class prior to the hikes we discuss and practice convenient sketching mediums and techniques. Both beginning and experienced artists welcome. Hike locations will be discussed at the evening class. A materials fee of $17.00 for a set of B&W supplies is payable to the instructor at the first class meeting.
