Find your way around the wilderness

Ready for a challenge?

Topo Map and Compass for the Wilderness Hiker course starts soon
Now enrolling - starts April 23!
Wednesdays, April 23 & 30, 6:30pm - 9:30pm,
Saturday, Sunday field trips,
May 3 & 4, 8:30am-4:40pm

Gain the confidence to hike cross-country (off trail) because you know exactly where you are.

The first evening covers the basics: topographic maps, declination, and supplies. The second evening concentrates on map contours — the unique feature of topo maps that gives you a picture of the terrain.

PLOT YOUR COURSE: The Saturday field trip meets in the mountains near Placitas. We hike 1-2 miles to a vantage point, and learn how to use a base-plate compass, take compass readings, practice triangulation, and learn to use map and compass together.

THE FUN OF ROUTEFINDING IN DIFFICULT TERRAIN:
On the Sunday field trip, we’ll spend most of the day on a challenging routefinding hike of several miles, learning how to walk on compass bearing in open and forested country and around obstacles.
