Tularosa: Historic Homes & Artists’ Studios
The tour includes the home of folk artist Jean McDonnell, once part of the original farm land surrounding the historic district; the home of weaver Glen Zoch and his wife, children’s author, Susanne, with historical connections to the Buffalo Soldiers; and mixed media and folk artist Karen Lerner’s home, surrounded by a flower garden and acequia system that covers an entire town block.
Fee includes travel and tour guide, Cynthia Prelo-Riedlinger, who enjoys hometown roots in Tularosa.

El Malpais
El Malpais National Monument near Grants is almost entirely covered by basalt lava flows with many unusual features such as lava tubes, ice caves, and cinder cones. The plant life is abundant and varied. Stops include Sandstone Bluffs, the El Calderon area, Zuni Ice Cave, and Bandera Crater. Bring hiking boots (the lava is rough), jacket, snacks and water. Fee includes transportation, admission fees, tour guide Dick Yeck, and boxed lunch.

Crownpoint Rug Auction
An unforgettable evening whether or not you decide to purchase. The Crownpoint Navajo Rug Auction is a significant monthly cultural event for the area. View exquisite handmade Navajo rugs made by traditional weavers. Many other Native American crafts are on sale, including jewelry, pottery, beadwork, and more. Enjoy dinner in Grants, and then on to Crownpoint, with time to view the rugs before the auction at 7:00. Fee includes tour guide and transportation.

Tent Rocks
Kashe-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument features spectacular views and one-of-a-kind cone-shaped “tent rock” formations, products of explosive volcanic eruptions 6 to 7 million years ago. This is truly one of the “must see” spots in New Mexico. The trail up to the top of the canyon where we eat lunch and enjoy the view includes a 600’ gain in elevation and is narrow and steep in places. Fee includes boxed lunch, transportation and tour guide, Dick Yeck.

Sunspot and the Lodge at Cloudcroft
At the southern end of the NM Scenic Byway lies Sunspot, the site of the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak, selected in 1953 due to its isolation from pollution, the dry air of the southwest, and days of sunshine. It is used by students and scientists from around the world. See a variety of telescopes, including the one made for observing sunspots. Lunch at Rebecca’s in the historic Cloudcroft Lodge, named for a ghost! Fee includes tour guide and travel.

Hiking & Digital Photography at Ghost Ranch
Celebrate the extraordinary beauty of Georgia O’Keeffe Country with an overnighter to Ghost Ranch, led by award-winning digital photographer Lisa Tannenbaum. We’ll hike Box Canyon Trail the first day, with our choice of trails the second day.
