How to Write Queries and Synopses
that Get Agents’ and Editors’ Attention

9am-4pm, Saturday, April 12
Bring a sack lunch.

It’s become almost impossible to sell your novel or nonfiction book without an agent. They want short but complete letters that grab their attention, as well as a captivating synopsis that reveals how well you write. Once you get an agent, the agent needs a description of the plot and characters and ways to attract the attention of editors. Most writers say it’s the most challenging, yet worthwhile piece of writing they ever attempt. Award-winning author Eileen Stanton will provide handouts and individual help to each writer. It’s essential that you have begun your book and worked on it enough to be familiar with your plot and characters.

45 Ways to Add Suspense, Colorful Characters
and Riveting Scenes to Novels

9am-4pm, Saturday, March 29
Bring a sack lunch.

There’s more to a novel than an ingenious plot. There are also colorful characters, who are created to surprise the readers and sometimes the author. There are scenes where they say and do things you never would do in real life. If that’s not happening in the book you’re writing, you need to raise the suspense, jack-up the dialog, lecture your characters, and rev up the scenes. Bring one of your chapters that bother you, some character sketches that bore you, and some scenes that seem to be going nowhere. We’ll work on them in class, and give you at least 45 ideas that will improve your book, and happily surprise you. Eileen Stanton has written novels, plays, documentaries and radio and TV commercials.
