Artist Robert Montoya in Rio Rancho Feb 26

Traditional Pueblo Painting

The Story of New Mexico brings Robert Montoya to share his life as an artist with us in Rio Rancho on Monday, February 26. He will show slides of his famous mural, Indian Maiden Feeding Deer, showcased at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Soe Khuwa Pin, Montoya’s Tewa name, means Fog Mountain, describing him as an ally with things of the imagination and spirit. His artwork is a changing blend of contemporary and traditional Indian art styles and draws from the sources of pueblo life, religious symbols, pictographs, and the artist’s imagination. Come and bring your questions as we listen to him share some of his ideas and how he became an artist.

Robert Montoya is a self-taught artist with ties to both Sandia and San Juan Pueblos. He was encouraged to paint by his artist-teacher mother and his father, a skilled carpenter. He has a degree in architecture from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Oklahoma. He is vice-president of Mimbres and Associates, an architectural and city-planning firm in Santa Fe. He won a Best-of-Show award at the Santa Fe Indian Market.
