Anthony Rosales

Kickboxing instructor

Bored with your workout routine? A class with Anthony Rosales can help. But don’t be fooled. This guy will make you move, push, sweat and try until you succeed. He makes everyone work at their level, and he keeps the atmosphere fun while his students push themselves. Some students drop out after a few weeks, but the ones who keep trying describe the experience as addictive.

With the arrival of each class, Anthony Rosales’ Karate, Kajukenbo and Kickboxing school undergoes a transformation. Students arrive one by one and greet Anthony or “Sigun” (pronounced “see-goon”) as he is known by his students. Sigun refers to someone who has achieved a seventh degree blackbelt. There is a definite camaraderie in the room, and it seems everyone has been looking forward to this part of their day.

The students share stories and laughs in Anthony’s accepting and comfortable environment. It’s a great atmosphere for families and some students share the benefits of the workouts with their kids. As they prepare, they wrap their hands and stretch their muscles. Once everyone lines up, they get serious.

They run in place until Sigun tells them “four and four” and they quickly drop and do four sit-ups and four push-ups. They repeat this rigorous warm-up until their hearts are pounding. Then Tony puts them right to to work punching and kicking a variety of heavy bags. You can’t fake it in these classes. It takes effort.

Anthony Rosales has been put to tough tests his entire life. He grew up on East San Jose in Albuquerque. He found a way “up and out.” He was drawn to and inspired by martial arts from an early age, which he attributes to Bruce Lee. His parents couldn’t afford classes for Anthony at the time, so he worked a paper route to pay for his first Karate class. That was 35 years ago, and Anthony Rosales is still going strong with his own Kickboxing school, and has earned a position as the New Mexico representative for the International Kickboxing Federation.

Anthony knows it takes hard work to succeed because he’s been at it his entire life..

He’s been teaching with Continuing Education at UNM for nine years, and now he has countless success stories — from his students — to add to his own.
