Joe Calkins

Desktop Computing instructor

Joe Calkins doesn’t teach one way of doing things. It’s a means-to-an-end type of thinking he tries to instill in each student. He is a needs-based learner who has the ability to transfer a life’s experience of problem-solving into direct and simple solutions for his students. He teaches Excel, Word, Access, Windows, Intro to PCs (all basic office applications).

Joe has always been able to assess a problem, determine factors, and come up with an answer. From working with clunky old cash registers, to electronics, to writing software programs to perform accounting functions, Joe knows the value of success.

His ability to write simple programs led to his teaching his co-workers how to use them. He created a Word template while working with the U.S. Department of Energy that became a department-wide process. He was then faced with supporting his work on the phone and in person, and he was good at it.

Joe says that, “Performing a task with great skill and knowledge is uplifting. Knowing how to work in your environment makes you happier and boosts your self esteem. Being competent is empowering.”

Joe is a dedicated teacher who says, “The most important thing I do in any class is to find out exactly what a student wants to do with a computer program. This helps them determine a goal, and it helps me determine how to teach them. It helps them to really commit to getting the most out of the class.”
