Understanding Symbolism in Visual Communication
presentation by Maggie Macnab: Decoding Design explores natural patterns and the energetic properties they are associated with, how they relate to universal principles, number and shape, and how incorporating these qualities can create more effective and aesthetic visual communications—particularly in the area of identity design. Communicating deeply with substance rather than superficial style increases a communication’s sustainability, is widely understandable to a cross-cultural audience, and creates aware designers who are actively engaged in understanding nature by using it as a template through which to translate graphics.
Website Design and Search Engine Optimization
presentation by Zac Van Note: The most overlooked aspect of Search Engine Optimization is the design
behind the scenes of a website … the coding. All the keyword research
in the world won’t help a website if the development wasn’t thought
out. In this presentation, Zac will go over the most common
do’s and dont’s of website development in how it relates to successful Search
Engine Optimization.
The Art and Craft of Screenwriting: Concept and Story
presentation by Stephanie Kuehn: How do you find your own unique story with that million
dollar idea? What is cinematic storytelling? There is a
practical way into the craft of writing for film and there
is a necessary journey writers hunger to take: that of
understanding the real art of screenwriting. Stars,
directors and producers may be the high flyers in the film
industry but without the writer and their original story
and point of view, we have nothing but a blank screen.

A Brief History of New Media

Going back to the first computer invented by Babbage in England, finishing with artists working with science, and the Internet. Tsiongas will also talk briefly about her work. She uses still images, light, video, sculptural elements and sound technology as well as interactivity to create pieces that result in a liberation from expectation, for the viewer.
Information Architecture for Web Design & Multimedia
presentation by Laura Gutman: Graphic design means communicating with design. But we can't communicate what we don’t understand. And we can’t give our designs a visual structure unless we start by structuring the information we’re trying to impart. In the world of web design, this is called information architecture, and it’s an important part of the design process. But the print designer can also benefit from taking time to organize what the design is supposed to say, before trying to imagine the design. We’ll see examples of information architecture at work in web and print design, and will look at different strategies for mapping information in a way that helps us visualize its expression in the final product.
