Instructor biographies
Charles B. Fleddermann, PhD
Dr. Charles B. Fleddermann is a Professor of Electrical and Computer
Engineering, and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering at the
University of New Mexico. Professor Fleddermann earned his PhD and MS
degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a second BS degree in electrical engineering from the
University of Notre Dame. His research interests are in photovoltaics,
plasma processing of electronic materials, optical diagnostics of plasma
systems, and engineering ethics. Dr. Fleddermann has been on the faculty at
UNM for over twenty years and has taught a variety of courses at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Fleddermann teaches course # 70211, Electrical and Computer Engineering Solar Photovoltaics.
Sudharman K. Jayaweera, PhD
Dr. Sudharman K. Jayaweera received the BE degree in Electrical and
Electronic Engineering with First Class Honors from the University of
Melbourne, Australia, in 1997. He obtained his MA and PhD degrees in
Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 2001 and 2003,
respectively. Since July 2006, he has been a tenure-track assistant professor
at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of University of
New Mexico. His current research interests are in wireless communications,
wireless sensor networks, statistical signal/image processing, information
theory and quantum information processing. His current work in wireless
sensor networks includes distributed compression, decentralized
detection/estimation and data/decision fusion, robust and cooperative
communications and network optimization. Dr. Jayaweera teaches course # 70201, Wireless Revolution: Basic Principles and Emerging Technologies.
Ron Lumia, PhD
Dr. Ron Lumia has been a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering
Department as well as the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department
at the University of New Mexico since 1994. Since 2004, he also serves as
the Associate Chairman for the Mechanical Engineering Department. He
received a BS from Cornell University in 1972 and a MS and PhD from the
University of Virginia in 1977 and 1979, respectively. From 1986-94, he
was Group Leader of the Intelligent Control Group at the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST). Previously he held academic positions
at Ecole Superieure d’Ingenieurs en Electrotechnique et Electronique
(ESIEE) in Paris, France, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
in Blacksburg, VA, and the National University of Singapore. His technical
interests include microrobotics, computer vision, robot control, and
manufacturing. Dr. Lumia teaches course # 70305, Design for Manufacturability.
Robert Phillips, PhD
Dr. Robert Phillips (Bob) has been an Associate Professor of
Entrepreneurship at Texas Tech University (TTU) for several years. He
earned his PhD in business administration from Ohio State University and
has published widely on innovation and entrepreneurship. He has also
founded and managed three medical device companies and has been
selected as “Outstanding Professor” at TTU business school for three
consecutive years. Drs. Phillips and Salazar co-instruct courses # 70401, Fundamentals of Engineering Management, and # 70405, Intermediate Engineering Management.
Andy Salazar, PhD
Dr. Andres C. Salazar (Andy) is the PNM Chair on Microsystems,
Commercialization and Technology at the University of New Mexico, a
joint appointment as Professor in both the UNM School of Engineering
as well as the UNM Anderson Schools of Management. Dr. Salazar has
over thirty years of management experience at Bell Laboratories and at
several technology-based companies in Massachusetts, Florida, California
and Georgia. Drs. Phillips and Salazar co-instruct courses # 70401, Fundamentals of Engineering Management, and # 70405, Intermediate Engineering Management.
