What is Project Management?
Project Management is the discipline of defining and achieving targets for a group project, while optimizing the use of resources such as time, financing or personnel. Project Management clearly reports results in real time so that all the key players— management and production— stay on the same page and actively participate in the group’s progress. A project manager works to maintain the productive mutual interaction of the group. Project Management clearly defines roles and resources and sets benchmarks for success, so that processes can be measured as they are enacted and corrected when necessary. A key benefit of Project Management is that it identifies missing resources so that solutions may be implemented.
Project Management is a strategic competency that has successfully been applied in high profile projects such as the transformation of IBM by Lou Gerstner from an IT hardware giant to an IT software and computer services leader. Project Management has been crucial to the organization and management of the the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, and the upcoming Summer Games in Beijing. Project Management plays a major role in these enormous success stories and is applicable to any organizational project, no matter how complex or small.
